The divergence is not marginal

BrightEdge found that ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, and AI Mode disagree on brand recommendations for 62% of queries. Only 17% of queries return the same brands across all three platforms.

Citation volumes for the same brand can differ by 615x between two engines. A brand that is reliably cited on Perplexity may be virtually absent from Grok. A brand that appears consistently in ChatGPT answers may surface rarely in Claude.

This is not a fringe condition that affects a handful of edge-case queries. It is the baseline state of multi-engine brand visibility in 2025.

Single-engine optimisation is a false sense of security

Most brands that have started thinking about AI visibility have begun with ChatGPT. It has the largest market share, the most familiar interface, and the most accessible research on how it cites sources. That is a reasonable starting point.

It is a dangerous stopping point. A buyer who uses ChatGPT for discovery but Claude for validation may encounter two entirely different brand narratives in the same session. A competitor that is absent on ChatGPT but dominant on Perplexity captures the research-oriented, citation-checking segment of your market without ever appearing in the platform you are monitoring.
